Toxic Compost
From Oz:
Home gardeners angry and out of pocket after using toxic compost
from major recycler.
Garden centres in central Victoria and Melbourne
received a Bad batch of toxic compost from a local composting
facility. The suspect compost was combined into soil mixes,
and sold to backyard gardeners planting their summer crops.
"Nothing survived"
said Melbourne resident Kelly West.

"We were pretty excited about these beds. We
had zucchini, squash, tomato, eggplant, and radishes around
the edges, it's really disappointing".
When Kelly mentioned it to a friend, she soon
discovered she wasn't the only one who had lost their summer
crop. She's now one of more than 240 members of a Facebook
group of local gardeners who experienced the same thing.
Experts believe the compost was contaminated
with a powerful herbicide that wasn't removed in the composting
process.

The toxic substance is probably a powerful broadleaf
herbicide, according to Chris Williams of Melbourne U.
"Anecdotally, this
pops up all the time"
If your plants are not growing it may not be
your fault. "I think it's very easy for gardeners to see a
deformity or sickness on a plant and blame themselves," Dr
Williams said.

| A few years back we tested some product from
a large local composting facility. We wanted to see how the
worms reacted to the compost. We placed a small handful of
worms in four separate bins filled with different compost
mixes. Within 12 hours all the worms had died.
Compost is too important to leave up to chance.
For our own safety and food security it is important that
we all learn how to make our own rich, nutritious compost. |

This just in from the Ukraine:

Scattering used coffee grounds instead
of salt and sand is a great way to fight slippery roads AND
cut food waste! Icy sidewalks in Lviv, Ukraine are being coated
with brewed coffee grounds donated by local cafes, making
good use of tons of grounds that would otherwise go directly
in the bin.

The coffee grounds have abrasive
properties suitable for fighting frozen streets, and it also
improves soil quality after the ice has melted. Unlike road
salt, it protects dogs' paws and needs no collection after
use! Less strain on the environment and preserves natural
resources. We're here for it!

2021 Seedy Saturday Season
is a go.
... well kind of. |
In
years past Seedy Saturdays and Seedy
Sundays were always the kick off to the spring gardening
season. A unique mix of seed and gardening supply merchants,
environmental and community groups providing interesting workshops
and ideas. The Seed Exchange was easy and
successful way to spread diversity with local enthusiasts
always on hand to help build a productive and glorious garden.
Of course Seedy Sat./Sunday were also about more than just
seeds. It was time to shake off the cold grasp of winter and
reconnect with others breaking from their hibernation.
It was a time to get up close and personal with the
community. We have always known that we have a very
special clientele. The wide range of discussions at a Seedy
Sat./Sunday booth is testament to the heart and soul of our
customer base. We like to say that our customers "Get
it". They know the value and beauty of the natural world.
This
year is going to be a little different (where have I heard
that before). For the most part Seedy Sat./Sunday is going
Virtual for 2021. Most events have adopted
the Online or Zoom format. The good news is you will be able
to attend this year's events in your pyjamas (It goes without
saying that we think your should be able to attend any year's
event in your PJ's). The even better news is that you can
attend all the Seedy events this year.
See the events section below for a list of all the Seedy
Sat./Sunday programs so far for 2021. If your favourite event
is not listed please don't worry. Many cities and towns are
still in the planning stage. As new events are announced we
will be adding them to our website. Please refer to our events
page (www.cathyscomposters.com/event)
for an up to date list of active Seedy Sat./Sunday this season. |
